Many moons ago, the fine art of gem carving was at a zenith. During the Victorian, Edwardian and Art Nouveau periods, moonstones were added to the list of carved gemstones and that man-made touch brought out this gemstone’s mysterious properties and evanescent sheen.

An exceptionally rare and fine brooch has not one, but three man-in-the-moon face carved cameo moonstones aligned in a row. Each is 11 millimeters in diameter, each is hand carved and each ranks of gem quality with a sheen like no other.

This is a first for never before has seen or presented any jewel with more than one cameo man in the moon face of moonstone. Each is slightly different but all with the same serene and wise expression.

Modern carved faces, often of an inferior form of labradorite but called moonstone (usually white and with crackled interiors) are created by machine and cannot compare in their overall expression or subtlety of the faces’ details nor in the material itself.

Their companions are no less important for they are rare demantoid green garnets. Only mined in one area of Russia for a brief period before and after the turn of the 20th century, no gemstone on earth matches their intense grass green, sparkling presence.

These total .80 carats in weight, one even shows the lovely horsetail inclusions within its interior. All gems are set in 14k yellow gold coronet mounts.

Irresistible, this brooch is the epitome of what antique jewelry should be.
