As an American watch company that was based in Ohio, Gruen provided cleverly designed watches that housed Swiss-made movements and were once the largest timepiece company in the US. Like most American watch companies, Gruen has a complicated past, as they were sold a couple of times throughout the 50s and 70s.
The Gruen Precision ref. 770 CA is a charming watch, to say the least, and makes good use of the Valjoux cal. 7734 chronograph movement by pairing it with a beautiful dial and very cool case. The case on this Gruen Precision chronograph is 16k gold plated and retains its original Gruen signed bracelet that is two-toned with stainless steel and 10k gold-filled links.
The excellent 16k yellow gold plated stainless steel case is believed to remain unpolished as it features strong finishing and no evidence of being re-plated. The case retains its original pumped pushers and unsigned crown. The case back retains all of its factory markings and shows light signs of use. The original two-tone Gruen Metalink Drema bracelet with stainless steel and 10K gold-filled links is in remarkable condition and displays very little stretch from use.
The silver dial is in exceptional condition, featuring the date window at 6 o’clock and a black outer ring that contains a tachymeter scale in white and a telemeter scale in red, which accents the sub-dial colorations beautifully. The black and red sub-dials are in perfect condition and show no blemishes or signs of age. The original tritium hands have taken on a handsome golden coloration and exhibit no degradation when inspected under U.V. light.
The watch is keeping time and functioning perfectly, previous service history is unknown.
