In 1856, a couple of guys named Josef Girard and Urs Schild started a watch movement manufacturer called, appropriately enough, Dr. Girard & Schild. They rebranded a few times, first to Schild Freres, thenperhaps after realizing that neither of the previous names rolled off the tonguethey started putting the name Eterna on their watch dials. That one stuck.

The brand has put out some really incredible pieces over the years, most of which fall under the sports-driven tool watch category. But then there are gorgeous, dressier watches like this Eterna “bumper.” The watch leverages the brand’s atomic self-winding “bumper” Cal. 1159H movement, which in the 1940s was a triumph of horological excellence in itself.

Thepiece is bothsimpleand sophisticated, possessing a quality and feel similar to what you might find in a Patek Phillippe from the same era.And that makes this a real winner in our book.

CASE & BRACELET

The case appears to have been lightly polished in the past yet retains its factory case geometry and thick even lugs. The crown is also correct and appears to be original to the watch. The case retains its original factory markings. The watch will come supplied on a2pc handmade leather strap.

DIAL & HANDS

The original dial has achieved a wonderful and warm patina showing age without any damage or blemishing. The tonal track around the hour markers adds a little mid-century style to the dial. The original hands show consistent patina throughout and the white sweep seconds hand really pops off the dial.
